The Story

The thriller traces the central character, Deke Tanner, from his antagonistic relationships as a youth in a small, Mississippi Delta town to a bonding, adult frindship with his neighbor and hunting partner, Jesse Cotsworth. But Jesse's macabre death, labeled as a 'hunting accident,' shatters his life and leaves him in a state of anguish and desolation. A letter, written to him as a codicil, leads to the codename, 'whitetail,' and unlocks pieces of Cotsworth's sinister past and the prediciton of his own murder. Tanner's subsequent investigation leads him back to his old hometown and into the agonizing caverns of his memories to face a hated enemy from his childhood, requite the death of his friend and save his family. The past comes full circle for both men who, unable to solicit help from police, rekindle their animosity in a bizarre game of wits that can only end in death.
