The Story

The first edition, 1959, of the University of Chicago Press boxed set of the complete Greek tragedies, edited by David Grene and Richmond Lattimore: four cloth-bound hardcover volumes in the publisher's black slipcase, issued without dust jackets. Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides in two volumes, each bound in its own shade of cloth from tan to red. It holds every surviving tragedy by the three playwrights, in the translations long used in university courses on Greek drama. This is the first boxed issue, not the 1992 Centennial Edition.

The set is graded Very good. The cloth spine of the Aeschylus volume is faded and lightly spotted; the other three volumes are clean and bright. The slipcase is sound, with a scuff on one side and light wear along the edges. All of this is shown in the photographs. This is the only set we have.

The copyright page of Volume III reads “Volume III published 1959. Composed and printed by The University of Chicago Press” with no later printings listed, so that volume is a first printing. Ask through the Enquire button and we will send photographs of the copyright pages.
