From the Introduction Stress is a contemporary word and a contemporary problem. While at times, most of us have felt worn out and run down, some of us experience the more serious effects of chronic stress and burnout—that state of physical. emotional, and spiritual exhaustion. Chronic stress and burnout come on as slow fizzles and not explosions. And many of us are not aware of these problems until we smell our psychological and spiritual wires burning. Because of the widespread nature of excessive stress and burnout, it is important to be able to identify their effects in ourselves and in others. Some of the most common physical symptoms are fatigue and exhaustion, insomnia, and nagging physical ailments, such as frequent stomach upset, headaches, muscular aches. etc. In addition, chest pains, heart palpitations, and high blood pressure are common. Some of the most common emotional and spiritual symptoms include irritability, anxiety, depression, excessive anger, disillusionment, cynicism, and bitterness. The seven studies in Stressed-Out will look at some of the common causes of excessive stress and examine what the Bible has to say about them. More specifically,the lessons cover worry, work, failure, conflict, and loss as sources of stress. Finally, the study will look more closely at the process of burnout and how to beat it. As the participant moves through these studies, he/she will find help in managing the wear and tear of contemporary living.
