The history of the African American attempt to gain the right to vote begins at the Revolutionary War, continues through the Civil War, Reconstruction, the New Deal, the second Civil Rights Movement that culminated in the Voting Rights Acts of 1965, to the historic Jackson campaign for the Democratic nomination.
