New Hymns of Praise (English/Chinese)

The Story

This new hymn resource for North American congregations with Chinese language ministries is a rich collection of 143 hymns and songs with bilingual texts. As a supplement to Hymns of Praise (1994), the new volume is a joint venture of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its publisher, Augsburg Fortress, together with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hong Kong and its publisher, Taosheng. This remarkable collaboration involved editorial teams, authors, composers, and translators from both churches over a period of more than five years. The result is a diverse gathering of mostly newer hymns, many of them already well-known among Chinese-American Christians. Hymns from Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America are represented, as well as translations of English-language hymns from such sources as Evangelical Lutheran Worship, With One Voice, and Worship & Praise Songbook. The majority of the hymns can be sung in either Mandarin or Cantonese and all include an English text. Keyboard accompaniments for all the hymns are also provided in this volume.
