Twelve-year-old Lisa Grey struggles to cope with a mother whose traumatic experiences as a nurse in Vietnam during the war are still haunting her. It is 1981, and the Vietnam War has been over for years. But inside Lisa Grey's house, the effects of the war are far from gone. Her father was killed in Vietnam and her mom, a nurse in the war, suffers from terrifying nightmares about the servicemen she saw die. Lisa's tired of worrying about her mother, hearing about the war, and dealing with its aftermath. So when her seventh grade class begins a study unit on the Vietnam War, Lisa wants nothing to do with it. But when her teacher convinces her to participate, Lisa finds out that she is able to come to terms with her family's troubled past. She is able to make peace with the war.
