Life-- How Did It Get Here? By Evolution or by Creation?

The Story

This 1985 publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) is lavishly illustrated in full color. With an initial pressing of 2,000,000 copies, it was intended for fairly wide distribution. This is an updated version of the Watchtower's 1967 book, Did Man Get Here By Evolution or By Creation, presented in a much more attractive format than the 4' x 6' of the 1967 book. The arguments are derivative of most other creationists. However, the last 20 pages present some distinctive Watchtower doctrines. Here are some quotations from the book, that often illustrate distinctive doctrines of the WBTS: 'Recoiling from these (evolutionary) conclusions are the 'scientific creationists.' But their interpretation of the Genesis creation account has led them to claim that the earth is only 6,000 years old and that the six 'days' allowed in Genesis for creation were each only 24 hours long. But does such an idea accurately represent what the Bible is saying? Was the earth, and all its life forms, created in just six literal days? Or is there a reasonable alternative?' (Pg. 8-9) 'And this quite realistic account (in Genesis) indicates that the creative process continued throughout a period of, not just 144 hours (6x24), but over many millenniums of time.' (Pg. 34) 'All those who are resurrected will be educated in God's righteous standards in a paradise environment... If they accept God's rule and conform to his standards, they will be judged worthy of continued life... But those who rebel against God's righteous rule will not be allowed to continue living to mar the peace and joy of others. They will receive an adverse judgment.' (Pg. 246) 'The nations will come to know that Jehovah is the God of Creation when he confronts them shortly. That will happen when he brings an end to the miserable human experiment of trying to be independent of God.' (Pg. 249) 'If we want to live forever in Paradise, then the Bible shows that we must follow the example of those who respect the Creator, his purposes and his laws...
